22nd June: Panel session on Social Media Inside the Firewall

For our next KMLF meeting we’re planning to try something a little different. We’re going to be running a highly interactive panel session on the topic of “social media inside the firewall”, or SMIF for short. Also known as Enterprise 2.0, or Intranet 2.0, this is the use of tools such as blogs, wikis, rss, tags, etc inside an organisation.

We will explore any questions about this topic but some examples might be:

  • What lessons can organisations we learn from the use of these tools in the Internet?
  • And perhaps more importantly, which lessons don’t apply?
  • How can you encourage adoption of these tools?
  • What are the likely benefits?

We’re looking for at least one KMLF member to join us on the panel. Please email us if you have experience and/or a strong interest in this topic and would be able to join us in Melbourne on the 22nd June.

Full session details to follow once we’ve confirmed the panel.

Knowledge management education in Melbourne

We’re hoping to make this blog the place to go to find out what is happening in KM in Melbourne. What better way to start than to list the universities offering KM courses. Now I’ve done some Googling and I can only find two programs:

Now there must be others so please provide a comment pointing to other academic KM courses here in Melbourne.

Summary: Making SNA More Social

Last night a small but interested (and interesting) group attended Andrew Rixon’s session on making SNA more social. My thanks to Andrew for making it such an interesting night.

Andrew started us of with some sociagramatic exercises before giving us a whirlwind tour of the history and development of SNA. Who would have thought that SNA has its roots in the 1930’s? Andrew’s presentation generated a lot of discussion especially as we discussed real live SNA maps from some of his projects (with the organisations’ identities kept secret of course).

The one major take out for me? That the interpretation of SNA outputs is best done as a process of creating shared meaning amongst the survey participants.

Many people who indicated they were coming did not attend. I guess the soccer traffic kept a lot away. Or do people have a problem with the venue, location, topic, or timing? Please email the committee with any thoughts.

Andrew has provided some further reading on social networks. Anecodote are also planning to run more public sessions on SNA.

Welcome to the new KMLF blog

Andrew Mitchell, Luke Naismith, Keith De La Rue, Frank Connolly and I met for lunch yesterday and during the discussion on what shall we do for KMLF in the second half of the year we decided to create a new blog.

The purpose of this site is to keep you up to date on KMLF activities, provide a window into the work of the KMLF committee and provide you with news about KM happenings in and around Melbourne. We will also use this site to publisize our upcoming events.

Of course, like any good blog site we would like to hear what you think KMLF should be doing and how we can keep the KM conversation in Melbourne vibrant and interesting. Simply post a comment.
